Ti-6Al-4V (Gr5 and Gr23)
Grade 5, also known as Ti6Al4V, Ti-6Al-4V or Ti 6-4, is the most commonly used alloy. It is significantly stronger than commercially pure titanium while having the same stiffness and thermal properties (excluding thermal conductivity, which is about 60% lower in Grade 5 Ti than in CP Ti). It is a two phase α+β titanium alloy, with aluminum as the alpha stabilizer and vanadium as the beta stabilizer. This high-strength alloy can be used at cryogenic temperatures to about 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is used in the annealed condition and in the solution treated and aged condition. This grade is an excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance, weld and fabricability.
Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5
This is the most widely used titanium alloy. It has very high strength but relatively low ductility. The main application of this alloy is in aircraft and spacecraft. Offshore use is growing. The alloy is weldable and can be precipitation hardened.
Ti-6Al-4V ELI Grade 23
An alpha-beta alloy based on Grade 5. The amount of interstitial elements (O, N, C) is reduced.
Improved stress corrosion cracking (SCC) properties in seawater compared to Grade 5.
Especially suited for thick wall highly stressed parts.
